Channel 4 Racing launched on 22 March 1984 with a transmission from Doncaster, taking over midweek racing that had previously aired on ITV. On 5 October 1985, the week after World of Sport ended, it assumed ITV's Saturday afternoon coverage. From 1986, the amount of racing was substantially reduced, focusing on major tracks such as Newmarket, Epsom, Doncaster, York, Sandown Park, and Kempton, while dropping smaller venues like Warwick, Nottingham, and Market Rasen. Over time, additional courses were added: Chester in 1989, Cheltenham in 1995, Newbury in 2002, Goodwood full-time in 2007, Haydock Park full-time in 2008, and Aintree in 2011, with Ascot's jumps meetings initially and flat meetings from 2012.

From 2007, Channel 4 Racing mainly featured meetings from the Racing UK courses under a three-year contract guaranteeing 80 days of racing per year. Coverage was sponsored by Totesport in 2006 and 2007, and by Dubai from 2008 to 2016. In 2013, Channel 4 Racing became the exclusive free-to-air home of the Derby, Cheltenham Festival, Grand National, and Royal Ascot under a four-year deal signed in March 2012, though those events had previously been free-to-air on other channels. The final day of Channel 4 Racing was on 27 December 2016, featuring Kempton's Christmas meeting and the Welsh Grand National from Chepstow, after Channel 4 lost the broadcasting rights to ITV from 2017.
